Heartbreaking Dawns bring us this new hot sauce made with the Carolina Reaper. If you know the Carolina Reapers reputation for heat, you’d probably expect this sauce to be a hiccup maker. After all, the pepper was declared the hottest pepper in the world by Guinness World Records in 2013. If that is what you are thinking, one taste and you will be pleasantly surprised by Fervor hot sauce. It is hotter than most commercial sauces, but this artisan sauce is not over the top hot at all.
The heat of the Carolina Reaper and Red Habanero peppers is balanced well with honey and fruit. The scent and flavor of strawberry and orange heighten the fruity qualities of the peppers, adding too and bringing out those flavors usually masked by capsicum.
Although surprised at the relatively tame heat levels compared to the Carolina Reaper itself, I was not at all surprised by the ample flavor underneath that heat. Heartbreaking Dawns is known for deep, rich, savory artisan sauces. This addition to their offering does not disappoint in any way.
This is a smooth sauce with very few visible chunks. It is thicker than commercial hot sauces, but not so much that it is difficult to pour. Off the spoon, it was not only bearable but pleasant. It is the type of sauce that a true heat lover will enjoy drizzled over their favorite foods more than sauces so hot they’re best used for cooking.
